Let’s Get Honest about Multitasking

This week we feature an upcoming workshop by our coaching colleague Wendy Edelstein

We all know that the odds of getting more done because we’re juggling two or more tasks is as likely as spotting a unicorn walking down the street. Yet, although we’re aware that multitasking’s benefits are as mythical as that whimsical creature, we persist in using this flawed tactic.

Why do we multitask when we know it’s not effective? Our thoughts can be like fireflies that capture our attention and then dim. Because our minds are as active as those beguiling insects, a new thought appears and distracts us. That’s how an hour can pass in which we make little headway on the task we intended to complete.

We all do it. There’s no shame in admitting it. I do it. All. The. Freaking. Time.

That juggling thing? It wears me out.

I’m happy to say that I’ve gotten much better at hunkering down and resisting those ever-present distractions that are like, well, the notifications on a mobile phone.

There are tools and gizmos and gadgets that can help. But they won’t be game changers until you get clear on your bigger, true purpose. In my case, nothing lights me up more than when a client discovers new possibilities for herself and takes actions that lead her to connect with more energy, excitement, and vibrancy.

I want to support you to lead a calmer, more joyful life in which you feel empowered and aligned with your purpose. Let’s put down the metaphorical balls and focus on what’s really important right now.

To that end, I’ve created a group program to support you to access your best self. It’s called Powerful Productivity Practices for Women at Work: Manage your minutes, get more done, sleep better. The four-month program begins on July 11.

I’ve assembled a rich mix of exercises, assessments, homework, and content that you’ll get to experience with a group of other women who share your commitment to improve their productivity. I will lead two hour-long mid-day calls with the group each month and provide monthly laser coaching sessions to each group member.

As someone who’s participated in coaching groups, I have experienced the power of learning from others and benefitted from drawing upon that collective wisdom. It’s often amazing how witnessing and helping others can inspire us to tap into our own wellspring of creativity and resources.
