Holiday Trash Tips

‘Tis the season – for all kinds of extra waste generated from our celebrations.

Here are some general tips of how to handle your excess. Rules for recycling can vary by city, so if in doubt, check out your waste company’s website for specifics.

Trash/Landfill

  • Ribbons & bows (if beyond re-use)

  • Broken ornaments

  • Foil/cellophane wrap

  • Styrofoam / packaging

  • Loose plastic bags (bundled into 1 bag)

  • Broken dishes or glass

  • Plastic gift and credit cards

  • Plastic corks

Recycle/Re-use

  • Paper gift wrap (not shiny)

  • Pie tins (cleaned)

  • Gift boxes and bags

  • Cardboard boxes

  • Bubble wrap (can take to packing store for re-use)

  • Envelopes, paper only cards (no glitter, foil, photos)

E-Waste

  • Broken light strings

  • Batteries

  • Electronics

Compost

  • Potted plants, cut flowers & wreaths (without pots/florist foam/wire frames)

  • Real corks

  • Food scraps

  • Waxed paper

  • Xmas trees & wreaths
