Organizing as Election Stress Relief

We know the media coverage of tonight’s election is going to be a nail-biter – no matter who you’re voting for. Listening to the pundits and commentators may make you feel stressed and worried. When the rampant speculations become overwhelming or the results make you anxious, use organizing to regain a sense of control and order in your life.

Here’s our top 10 ideas you can do right in front of the TV:

  1. Gather items from your medicine cabinet, put them in a box and sort them in into smaller containers labeled “keep”- “medical waste” -“recycle” – “trash”
  2. Take a break from the screen; pick up 5 things from the room you are in and put them away
  3. Collect your ironing, set up your board in front of the TV and iron away your stress
  4. Remove your desk drawer…or your junk drawer, set it up on a table and sort it
  5. Heap up your accumulated catalogs and magazines and purge them
  6. Sort that nasty box of chargers and cables you’ve been meaning to get to
  7. Fold laundry and take the time to put it away during the lulls
  8. Pull out your sock drawer or underwear drawer and sort them—practice some of Marie Kondo’s folding techniques!
  9. Retrieve all your Tupperware/food storage containers and match all the lids and bases – discard any orphans
  10. Amass your media – dvd’s, cd’s and games – sort by type. Purge those that don’t bring you joy and restock your cabinet with the revised collection – maybe it’s time to get rid of those VHS tapes?

No matter what is going on in the bigger world, know that you have created order and function in your own home.

Now, take a few deep breaths, step back and embrace your new reality.
